Barnafoss: The Waterfall of Legends and Turbulent Currents
Where nature and folklore collide
Barnafoss, or “Children’s Waterfall,” is a dramatic series of rapids and cascades carved by glacial meltwater rushing through a narrow lava channel. Unlike wide, towering waterfalls, Barnafoss is defined by its intense movement, vivid blue water, and sculpted rock formations.
The waterfall is deeply tied to Icelandic folklore. According to legend, two children from a nearby farm fell into the raging waters while crossing a natural stone bridge, giving the waterfall its haunting name. The bridge later collapsed, leaving only the roaring currents behind.
Today, safe walkways and bridges allow visitors to observe the powerful flow from above, especially striking when snowmelt or heavy rains increase the water volume. Nearby Hraunfossar, where countless streams flow gently from lava fields, offers a beautiful contrast.
Barnafoss is both visually powerful and emotionally resonant—a place where natural force and ancient stories intertwine.
