Northern Lights Season in Iceland: When to Go
The Northern Lights season in Iceland runs from late September to early April, when nights are dark enough for aurora viewing.
Peak activity often occurs around the fall and spring equinoxes, when Earth’s magnetic field aligns more favorably with the Sun. While winter offers longer nights, weather conditions can be more challenging.
Auroras are not related to cold temperatures—darkness, clear skies, and solar activity are what truly matter. On active nights, the Northern Lights can be seen from many places in Iceland, but remote locations offer the best experience.
Þingvellir National Park provides wide open skies, Mývatn offers unobstructed views, and Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is famous for aurora reflections on icebergs. Snæfellsnes Peninsula and Kirkjufell Mountain are also top photography spots.
